At the end of the 50s, as we’ve already told you in a previous article, Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for that project the Egg, the Swan, the Swan sofa and Series 3300. After introducing you to the Egg Chair, now it is time to take a closer look at yet another fabulous design by Jacobsen – the Swan.
The Swan chair – inspiring design
In 1958, Arne Jacobsen designed the Swan chair for the lobby and lounge areas of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Jacobsen not only used the Swan for the SAS Royal Hotel, he also used it for his following projects like Danmarks Nationalbank.
The Swan in colors
An elegant and organic shape ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home; and it has been a design icon ever since. The Swan was a technologically innovative chair: No straight lines – only curves! A moulded shell of synthetic material on an aluminium star swivel base, with a layer of cold foam covering the shell upholstered in fabric or leather.
Jacobsen built the original in own garage in Klampenborg, and the Swan Chair has been in production at Fritz Hansen ever since. The Swan is ideal for lounge and waiting areas as well as the home.
The Swan and The Egg – fabulous!
The star base is made of aluminium mounted on a satin polished steel pedestal. The shells of the swan are made of a synthetic material, padded cold-cured foam. The swivel base consists of a satin-polished, welded steel tube and a 4-star base in injection molded aluminium. The Swan chair may be upholstered in a wide range of fabric or leather and is also available with an automatic return mechanism.
